Baccarat asks you one question: will the player hand or the banker hand finish closer to nine? You do not make any decisions after placing your chip — the drawing rules are fixed — which is exactly why the game is so easy to learn and so hard to play badly. What baccarat is and how a hand works
Two hands are dealt from a shoe of six or eight decks: one labelled player, one labelled banker. The names are historical — you can bet on either, and neither hand is yours. Cards 2–9 count at face value, tens and picture cards count zero, aces count one, and only the last digit of the total matters (7 + 8 = 15 = a total of 5). Each hand receives two cards; a third card is drawn for one or both hands according to a fixed table that neither the dealer nor the players can influence. The hand closer to nine wins. Punto banco vs chemin de fer vs baccarat banque
When a casino, a live-dealer studio or an online lobby says "baccarat", it almost always means punto banco. The two older European variants survive mostly in a handful of French and Monégasque rooms and in James Bond films.

In chemin de fer the "bank" really is a player's money, so the casino earns only a commission and the optimal play on a total of five becomes a genuine decision. In punto banco there is nothing to decide, so every strategy question reduces to which bet has the lowest edge — a question with a single answer.
Why baccarat is the lowest-edge table game
Most casino bets carry an edge between 2% and 5%: 2.70% on European roulette, 5.26% on American roulette, 1.41% on a craps pass-line bet, typically 2–10% on slots. Baccarat's banker bet costs 1.06% of each stake on average, even after the 5% commission. Only blackjack played with perfect basic strategy (roughly 0.5%) and a few craps odds bets are cheaper, and both require the player to do something right. Banker requires nothing.
The reason is structural. The banker hand draws its third card after seeing the player's third card, and its drawing table is tuned to exploit that information. That is why banker wins 45.86% of hands against 44.62% for player — a 1.24-percentage-point advantage that the casino claws back with the 5% commission, leaving a net edge of 1.06%. What strategy can and cannot do in baccarat
Because the draw rules are fixed, no decision you make during a hand changes its outcome. What you control is which bet you place, how much you stake and how long you sit. Is baccarat the best casino game to play?
On house edge alone it is one of the best: 1.06% on banker without any skill required. Blackjack with perfect basic strategy is lower (about 0.5%) but demands correct decisions on every hand. If you want a low-cost game with no study, baccarat banker is hard to beat.
What is the difference between baccarat and punto banco?
Punto banco is the version of baccarat played in virtually every casino today, where the house banks every hand and drawing is automatic. 'Baccarat' without qualification almost always means punto banco. Chemin de fer and baccarat banque are older variants in which a player holds the bank.
Why does the banker bet pay commission?
Because banker wins more often than player — 45.86% against 44.62% — thanks to drawing its third card last. Without commission banker would have a player edge of about 1.24%; the 5% commission turns that into a 1.06% house edge.
Can you count cards in baccarat?
Technically yes, but the effect is tiny. Studies by gambling mathematicians show that even a perfect count rarely produces a positive-expectation bet on banker or player, and the opportunities are worth pennies per hour. Certain side bets are more countable, which is why casinos watch them.
Is online baccarat rigged?
