There is one fact that every roulette strategy has to survive: on a European wheel, every bet on the layout returns 97.30% of the stake on average, and no arrangement of bets changes that. A system can change how often you win a session and how badly you lose the rest. It cannot change the average. The Martingale system
The oldest and most popular: bet one unit on an even-money bet, double after every loss, return to one unit after a win. Each win recovers all previous losses plus one unit of profit. It feels unbeatable because the streak of losses needed to hurt you feels impossible. It is not impossible; it is merely infrequent, and when it arrives it takes everything the system has won.

With a €1–€100 table you get seven bets per cycle. A cycle wins €1 with probability 99.06% and loses €127 with probability 0.94%. Expected value per cycle: 0.9906 × €1 − 0.0094 × €127 = −€0.21. That is exactly 2.70% of the average €7.60 staked per cycle — the house edge, untouched. Over 200 spins (roughly 97 cycles) the probability of hitting at least one seven-loss streak is about 60%. On an American wheel the busting probability per cycle rises to 1.12% and the expected loss per cycle to −€0.40.
What table limits actually do
Players blame the table maximum for Martingale's failure. Remove it and the maths does not improve: with an infinite limit and an infinite bankroll you would eventually win every cycle, but no bankroll is infinite, and the expected loss per euro staked stays at 2.70% at every stage. The limit simply decides at which point the inevitable loss lands — seven doublings on a 100:1 spread, ten on a 1,000:1 spread (probability of ten straight losses: 0.13%, loss when it happens: €1,023).
The Fibonacci system
Bet sizes follow the Fibonacci sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89. Move one step forward after a loss and two steps back after a win. Because the progression is gentler than doubling, a single win no longer recovers everything; it recovers the last two losses. The upside is that a bad streak costs less than in Martingale; the downside is that you need more wins to get back to the start.

Fibonacci is Martingale with the brakes on. It survives longer streaks within the same table limits and loses less when it finally busts, but it also wins less per cycle and spends more time recovering. The expected loss remains 2.70% of every euro placed.
The D'Alembert system
Increase the bet by one unit after a loss, decrease it by one unit after a win. The idea is that wins and losses will "balance", leaving you with one unit of profit per win. The flaw is the same as every progression: wins and losses on a 48.65% bet do not balance. Over a long session you will have slightly more losses than wins, which means your bet size drifts upward over time and your average stake grows.

Four wins, four losses, net zero: the system works only when wins and losses are equal and the wins come at the higher stakes. The expected result is still −2.70% of total staked, and the total staked is larger than it would be betting a flat €5.
The Labouchère (cancellation) system
Write down a sequence such as 1-2-3-4. Each bet is the sum of the first and last numbers (here 5). Win: cross both numbers off. Lose: add the amount lost to the end of the line. When the line is empty you have won the total of the original sequence (10 units). Labouchère feels more controlled than Martingale because you choose the target; it busts just as reliably because a losing run lengthens the line faster than wins shorten it.

Four wins and four losses produced the target profit here because the wins landed on larger bets. Reverse the order of results and the line grows to 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 with €36 lost before a single cancellation. The system needs roughly one win for every two losses to close a line; a 48.65% bet delivers that often enough to feel like it works, and fails often enough to cost 2.70% of everything staked.
The James Bond strategy
A flat-bet pattern rather than a progression: with €200, place €140 on high (19–36), €50 on the six line 13–18 and €10 on zero. It covers 25 of 37 numbers, which is why it wins two spins in three. It is also the clearest demonstration that covering more numbers does nothing to the edge.

You win 67.6% of spins and lose 2.70% of your stake on average, exactly as with any other combination. The 32.43% losing outcomes cost €200 each, so one bad spin wipes out two and a half wins. Played at this size, the strategy burns through a €1,000 bankroll in an average of roughly 185 spins.
Why no system changes expected value
Each spin is independent. The wheel does not know you doubled, and the probability of red is 18/37 whether your chip is worth €1 or €128. Your session result is the sum of many independent bets, each with an expected return of −2.70% of its size. Adding negative numbers of different sizes produces a negative number. Systems choose which spins carry the large bets; they cannot make those spins more likely to win.

Bankroll, variance and how long you stay ahead
If systems cannot change the mean, what about the spread? This is where bet selection matters. The standard deviation of a €1 even-money bet is about €1 per spin; of a €1 straight-up bet, about €5.84. Same expected loss, five to six times the swing.

After 100 even-money spins you are ahead almost four times in ten; after 10,000, almost never. Variance is your only friend in roulette, and it fades with every spin. The only real roulette strategies
Three decisions move your expected result. None involves a betting pattern.
Choose a single-zero wheel
European or French. This alone cuts the house edge from 5.26% to 2.70% — a 49% reduction in expected loss for zero effort. Never play American roulette when an alternative exists, and never place the five-number bet (7.89%).
Find la partage or en prison
If you play even-money bets, a French table with la partage halves the edge again, to 1.35%. Online, check the rules panel: some "French" tables are only French in layout. At 1.35%, roulette is competitive with the baccarat banker bet.
Match the bet type to the session you want
Even-money bets give the calmest ride and the best chance of a small win tonight. Straight-ups give a real chance at a large win and a high chance of losing the whole buy-in. Dozens and columns sit between. Decide based on what you can lose, then bet flat.
Control the spin count
Expected loss scales with spins. Live roulette at 40 spins an hour costs a quarter of what RNG roulette at 160 spins an hour costs at the same stake. Slower is cheaper.
Ignore bonuses that include roulette at low weighting
Playing roulette to clear a 35x wagering requirement at 10% contribution means staking 350 times the bonus. At 2.70% that is an expected loss of 9.45 times the bonus value. The bonus is not the gift it looks like.
Roulette myths
Hot and cold numbers
Casinos display the last 20–500 results because it sells bets, not because it predicts anything. Over 300 spins each number is expected to hit 8.1 times with a standard deviation of 2.8, so in any 300-spin sample some number will have hit 14 times and some other number 3 times purely by chance. A real wheel bias large enough to overcome a 2.70% edge would need tens of thousands of recorded spins on one physical wheel to detect, and modern wheels are inspected precisely to prevent it. RNG roulette has no wheel to be biased.
The gambler's fallacy
After ten reds, black is not "due". The probability of ten reds in a row is 0.074% (about 1 in 1,350) before the sequence starts; once nine have landed, the tenth is 48.65% red, 48.65% black, 2.70% zero, like every other spin. The wheel has no memory and no obligation to even out. Systems that wait for streaks before betting are betting on exactly the same odds as systems that don't.
Dealer signature and sector shooting
The theory that a croupier's consistent release speed lands the ball in predictable sectors has been tested many times. On modern wheels with deflectors and variable ball speeds, no reproducible signature has survived scrutiny, and online live studios rotate dealers and ball types specifically to break any pattern. It is not a strategy; it is a story.
