A bookmaker's welcome offer lasts a week. Its overround, its limits policy and its withdrawal times follow you for years. We rank on the things that last.

By CasinoTrust Editorial TeamUpdated 8 min readFact-checked against the Ranking Protocol

Bookmakers are the one gambling product where a sharp customer can be a long-term winner, which is exactly why the industry is built around pricing and limiting. This page ranks sportsbooks on the numbers that decide your results: the margin baked into each market, how many markets are actually priced, how the book treats winning accounts, and how fast money comes back out. It is part of our casino online reviews and pairs with the sports betting comparison table.

How we rank sports betting sites

The six scoring dimensions from the Ranking Protocol are re-weighted for sportsbooks. Trust counts for more than in any other category, because a bettor's balance can sit with an operator for weeks between deposit and withdrawal, and because account restrictions are the most common sportsbook complaint we receive. Bonuses count for less: free-bet value is easy to overstate and usually carries odds minimums that erode it.

Sportsbook scoring weights and what we measure
DimensionWeightWhat we actually measure
Trust & licensing25%Licence tier, segregated client funds, dispute route, limiting and voiding history
Markets & pricing25%Overround on main lines (1X2, spreads, totals), number of markets per event, niche leagues, player props
Payments & payouts20%Measured withdrawal time per method, fees, withdrawal limits, verification friction

Why overround matters more than a welcome bonus

Overround is the bookmaker's built-in margin. A market priced at 1.91 / 1.91 on a two-way line implies probabilities of 52.4% + 52.4% = 104.7%, so the book holds 4.7%. At 1.95 / 1.95 the hold drops to 2.6%. On a £100 bet per week, that 2.1-point difference is roughly £110 a year in expected cost — more than most free bets are worth once their minimum-odds conditions are applied. We sample overround on the same fixtures across every book on the day we test and report the spread, not a single cherry-picked market.

Market depth and the limits question

A book that prices 40 markets on a Premier League match but 3 on a Serie B match is a recreational book; that is fine if it matches how you bet, but you should know before you sign up. We also test what happens to winning accounts: two sharp-style testers bet closing-line-beating prices for four weeks and we record whether stakes were cut. Books that limit quickly are marked down on trust even if their headline prices are good, because a price you are not allowed to bet is not a price.

What to look for in a sports betting site

  • A licence from the regulator that covers your country, with the licence number on the footer matching the public register
  • Overround under 5% on main football and tennis lines and under 4% on major US sports spreads
  • Published maximum payout and maximum stake rules, so you know the ceiling before you win
  • Cash-out that is available on the markets you bet, not only on pre-match singles
  • Withdrawal to the same method you deposited with, without a minimum turnover on non-bonus funds
  • A clear policy on voided bets and palpable errors — and a record of applying it fairly
  • Live chat that resolves a real query, tested, in under ten minutes

Red flags that should stop you depositing

  • No licence number, or a licence seal image that is not a clickable link to the regulator's validator page
  • Terms that allow the book to void winning bets for "irregular betting patterns" without definition
  • Withdrawal limits per day or week so low that a moderate win takes months to extract
  • Welcome offers with minimum odds above 2.00 and rollover on the deposit plus the bonus
  • Odds that are consistently better than the market on obscure leagues — a sign the book relies on voiding, not pricing
  • Social-media complaints about delayed payouts that the operator answers with the same template
  • Any platform on our blacklist or operating under a licence that has been revoked

If you are new to sports betting

Learn to convert odds to implied probability before you place a bet: decimal odds of 2.50 imply 40%, so you need to believe the outcome happens more than 40% of the time to have a positive expectation. Most new bettors lose not because they pick badly but because they stake badly; a flat stake of 1–2% of bankroll survives the variance that a 10% stake does not. Our bankroll management guide covers staking plans in detail, and the Academy explains expected value in a way that transfers directly from casino games to betting. If you also play table games, the blackjack strategy guide is a good lesson in how small edges compound.

The ranked sportsbooks in brief

bet365

The benchmark for in-play betting. bet365 prices more live markets than any competitor we test, its bet delay is short and consistent, and its streaming catalogue is large. Pricing on main lines is competitive but not the sharpest; its strength is breadth and reliability, backed by tier-1 licences in the UK, Malta and multiple US states. Winning accounts are restricted, as at every recreational book, though in our tests it took longer to happen than at most. Withdrawals to cards take days, not minutes. Read the full bet365 review.

Stake

Stake's sportsbook has matured into a serious product: broad pre-match coverage, solid in-play, and the fastest settlement-to-wallet time in this list because payouts are on-chain. The trade-off is the licence — Curaçao's GCB regime is improving but does not offer the dispute route a UKGC bettor has — and a partial-KYC policy that can request documents at higher withdrawal thresholds. For crypto bettors who accept that trade, it is the strongest option we have tested. Read the full Stake review.

Betsson

Betsson is a publicly listed group with MGA and national licences across Scandinavia, Italy, Spain and Latin America. Its sportsbook is conservative in market count compared with bet365 but prices football and ice hockey well, and its regulated status means client funds and complaint handling meet a standard Curaçao books do not. Withdrawals are processed within the stated window in our tests. Bonuses are modest and terms are clear. Read the full Betsson review.

BC.Game

BC.Game is a crypto casino first and a sportsbook second, but the book is functional, covers the main leagues and esports well, and pays out in minutes. Its light-KYC approach appeals to privacy-minded bettors, with the caveat that source-of-funds checks can still be triggered on large or unusual wins. Pricing is average; market depth on minor leagues is thin. Sensible as a secondary account for crypto bettors. Read the full BC.Game review.

1win

1win targets emerging markets with a large welcome package and a wide payment menu including local methods and crypto. The sportsbook covers the major leagues and cricket comprehensively. Our trust score is held back by the Curaçao-only licence and by bonus terms that are generous in headline and strict in practice — check wagering and expiry before you opt in. Payouts were within a day in our tests. Read the full 1win review.

1xBet

No book we test lists more markets or more obscure events than 1xBet, and prices on those niche markets are often the best available. The trust picture is the problem: a Curaçao licence, a history of regulatory action in several countries and payout times that range from minutes to a week depending on method. It sits at the bottom of this ranking on trust, not on product. Use it with eyes open and small balances. Read the full 1xBet review.

Frequently asked questions

Which sports betting site has the best odds?

It varies by sport and market. Among the books we test, the regulated operators are tightest on major football and US sports, while crypto books sometimes lead on esports and niche leagues. The reliable approach is to hold two or three accounts and compare prices before each bet.

Is it legal to use an offshore sports betting site?

That depends on your country. Some jurisdictions prohibit unlicensed operators from accepting their residents; others penalise only the operator. Always check local law, and prefer a book licensed in your own country when one exists, because it gives you a regulator to complain to.

Why did a bookmaker limit my account?

Recreational bookmakers restrict accounts that consistently beat the closing line, bet on arbitrage opportunities or exploit bonus offers. It is legal in most jurisdictions. Exchanges and some crypto books are less aggressive about limiting, which is one reason sharper bettors gravitate to them.

How fast do sports betting sites pay out?

In our tests, crypto books settle withdrawals in minutes once a bet is graded. Regulated fiat books typically take one to five business days to cards and bank accounts, faster to e-wallets. Any first withdrawal can be delayed by identity verification, so verify before you need the money.

Are sports betting bonuses worth it?

Sometimes. A free bet at fair terms has real value, but most require minimum odds, exclude certain markets and expire within days. Calculate the bonus's expected value after the rollover and odds conditions, and never increase your stakes to clear one.
