A baccarat hand contains no decisions, so there is no playing strategy to learn. What does exist is a clear ranking of bets and a sensible way to run a session — plus a great deal of expensive nonsense in between.

Type "baccarat strategy" into Google and you will be sold systems that claim to beat a game containing no decisions at all. This guide takes a different route: it starts from the exact probabilities of punto banco and shows what each popular approach really does to your expected result. The verdict is short — back banker, flat, for a number of hands you fixed in advance — but the reasoning is worth following, because it holds for every fixed-odds game you will ever stake money on, from a casino table to a weekend accumulator.

Strategy 1: back banker, hand after hand

Banker takes 45.86% of hands, player takes 44.62%, and 9.52% end in a tie across eight decks. Once the 5% commission is deducted, banker costs an average of 1.06% of each stake while player costs 1.24%. That gap of 0.18 percentage points looks trivial on a single hand, but it is real money over time: across 1,000 hands at ₦25,000 a hand, choosing player hands the house an extra ₦45,000 in expected loss. No streak, no scoreboard pattern and no position in the shoe ever makes player the better bet under standard rules.

Rule variants are the one exception. On a "no-commission" table where a banker 6 pays half, banker's edge swells to 1.46% and player, at 1.24%, becomes the better bet. Strategy 2: leave the tie alone and treat side bets as entertainment

The tie pays 8:1 while the true odds against it run to about 9.5:1, handing the house 14.36% — thirteen times what banker costs you. At 9:1 it drops to 4.84%, still four times worse than banker. Side bets tell the same story under prettier names. Every figure below assumes eight decks; the pair bets deteriorate as the deck count falls.

Paytables differ from operator to operator, so the precise edge on the table in front of you may move by a point or two, but the ranking never does: nothing on the side layout is cheaper than the main banker bet. If chasing a 25:1 hit is part of the fun for you, budget for it the way you would budget a slots session, and keep that money entirely separate from your main stake.

Betting systems, checked against the real numbers

A betting system adjusts your stake according to what happened before. The expected value of any bet is stake × edge, and since every hand stands alone, the expected value of a run of bets is simply the sum of those — negative, whatever pattern you impose on it. What a system genuinely changes is the shape of your results: many small wins and rare disasters (Martingale), or the reverse (Paroli). Here is how that plays out in baccarat.

Martingale: double up after every loss

Open at ₦10,000 on banker, double after each loss and drop back to ₦10,000 after a win. Setting ties aside, banker loses a resolved hand 49.32% of the time. Losing seven straight carries a probability of 0.4932⁷ ≈ 0.71%, roughly once in every 141 sequences; eight straight is 0.35%, once in 285. A seven-loss run means staking 10,000 then 20,000, 40,000, 80,000, 160,000, 320,000 and 640,000 — ₦1,270,000 gone — and the next bet would need to be ₦1,280,000, above the ₦1,000,000 ceiling most ₦10,000 tables enforce. At live-table pace you get through perhaps 30 sequences an hour, so the run that erases a week of ₦10,000 wins turns up, on average, inside five hours of play. Each sequence that ends in a win nets ₦10,000 less the commissions paid along the way, and the average loss per sequence, busts included, is precisely the house edge multiplied by the average total staked. The only thing that has changed is the variance.

Fibonacci, d'Alembert and Labouchère

Think of these as Martingale in slow motion. Fibonacci walks the stake up the sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21… after losses and steps back two places after a win; d'Alembert adds a unit after a loss and takes one off after a win; Labouchère crosses numbers off a written list. All three depend on a winning run to repair a losing one, and in baccarat a win is less likely than a loss on every hand you play. The climb is gentler, so ruin arrives later and you need a smaller bankroll to survive it, yet the expected loss per naira staked sits stubbornly at 1.06% on banker. A d'Alembert player who is 20 units down needs 20 more wins than losses just to break even — an outcome that grows less likely, not more, the longer they stay at the table.

Paroli and the positive progressions

Paroli doubles after a win, normally for three wins before resetting. It cannot detonate the way Martingale does, because you are only ever risking your base stake plus the house's money. Three banker wins back-to-back come up with probability 0.5068³ ≈ 13% of sequences once ties are set aside; when that lands you collect 7 units before commission, while the other 87% of sequences shed 1, 1 or 2 units. Expected value: still −1.06% of everything staked. As a way to structure a session it is perfectly reasonable if you enjoy riding streaks — just be clear that it is a structure, not an edge.

Betting the patterns on the roads

"Follow the shoe", "bet against the chop", "ride the dragon tail" — every scoreboard system rests on the belief that past results move future probabilities. They do not. After eight banker wins in a row the banker probability is still 45.86%, give or take the rounding caused by the few cards already out of the shoe. The simplest proof is the room itself: if streaks could be read, no casino would mount them on a four-foot screen beside every table. The roads are displayed because they keep players seated and staking.

Strategy 3: flat staking, and 1-3-2-4 for variance control

Once you accept that the expected loss per hand is fixed, the honest question is a different one: what shape do I want my results to take? Two answers stand up to scrutiny.

Flat staking

Stake the same amount every hand. After N hands your result lands close to −1.06% × N × stake, with a standard deviation of roughly 0.93 × stake × √N. Over 100 hands at ₦10,000 that means an expected loss of about ₦10,600 with a one-standard-deviation swing of roughly ±₦93,000. Flat staking delivers the lowest variance per naira wagered, the most predictable session cost and the simplest record-keeping. It is also what professional advantage players do in games where they genuinely hold an edge, which should tell you something.

1-3-2-4

Stake 1 unit; if it wins, stake 3; if that wins, stake 2; if that wins, stake 4; then start again. Any loss sends you back to 1. The attraction is that after two wins you are already in profit (1 + 3 = 4 units) and the rest of the sequence risks mostly winnings. From a fresh start there are five outcomes: lose the first hand (−1), win then lose (+1 − 3 = −2), win-win-lose (+4 − 2 = +2), win-win-win-lose (+6 − 4 = +2), or win all four (+10). It does not shift expected value — total stake × 1.06% is the bill either way — but it caps a bad run at 2 units while leaving room for a streak to pay. Set against Martingale that is a sound trade: smaller swings, no collision with the table limit, and a natural stopping point every four hands.

Strategy 4: running a disciplined session

Since the hourly cost of baccarat is stake × hands per hour × edge, the two levers in your hands are the stake and the number of hands. A ₦20,000 banker bettor getting through 70 hands an hour at a live table is spending an expected ₦14,840 an hour; the same bettor on a speed table at 130 hands an hour spends ₦27,560. Slower is cheaper — and a squeeze table is the slowest there is, which is also easier on your data bundle.

  1. Fix the session bankroll

    Bring only what you could lose in full without it touching anything else, typically 1–5% of your total gambling bankroll as laid out in our bankroll management guide.

  2. Set the unit at 1–2% of the session bankroll

    A ₦500,000 session bankroll points to units of ₦5,000–₦10,000. That keeps an ordinary losing run of 8–10 units from ending your night early.

  3. Count hands, not minutes

    Settle on a number — 60 hands, say — and track them on the bead plate. When you reach it, stand up, win or lose.

  4. Set a stop-loss and a stop-win

    Half the session bankroll in each direction is a common pair of limits. The stop-win is not about protecting 'your' money; it is about leaving before variance takes it back.

  5. Skip the tie, skip the side bets, back banker

    Where the table runs no-commission with banker 6 paying half, back player instead.

  6. Write the session down

    Stake, hands played, result. After 20 sessions, set your real loss against stake × hands × 1.06%. It will land close, and that comparison is the entire lesson.

Can card counting beat baccarat?

Only on paper. Edward Thorp examined it back in the 1960s and Peter Griffin later put numbers on it: even with flawless tracking of an eight-deck shoe, player-favourable moments on banker or player surface so seldom, and with such a slim advantage, that the expected gain amounts to a few naira an hour at stakes that would already have you watched. The tie and certain side bets are more exposed late in the shoe, and a handful of professional teams have taken advantage of dealer errors and edge-sorted cards, but none of that is a strategy available to a recreational player.
