Roulette puts one question to you — where will the ball land? — and gives you roughly a dozen ways to answer, each with its own payout and its own level of risk. Inside bets: what they pay and what they should pay
Inside bets cover between one and six numbers. The payout never changes from wheel to wheel; only the probability does, which is why the identical bet costs you 2.70% on a single-zero wheel and 5.26% on a double-zero wheel. The "true odds" column below shows what a fair payout would look like.

The wheel and the table layout
A roulette wheel carries 36 numbered pockets in alternating red and black, plus one green zero (European and French wheels, 37 pockets) or a zero and a double zero (American wheel, 38 pockets). The numbers do not run in sequence around the rim; they are spread so that high and low, red and black, odd and even alternate as evenly as the maths permits. Clockwise from zero, the European sequence starts 0-32-15-19-4-21-2-25-17-34-6-27-13-36-11-30-8-23-10-5-24-16-33-1-20-14-31-9-22-18-29-7-28-12-35-3-26.
The table layout — the felt — is where the money goes. It prints the numbers 1–36 in three columns of twelve in numerical order, with the zero (or zeros) at the head. Ringed around that grid are the outside betting areas: three dozens, three columns, and six even-money boxes for red, black, odd, even, 1–18 and 19–36. Chips on the numbered grid are inside bets; chips in the surrounding areas are outside bets.
Outside bets: what they pay and what they should pay
Outside bets cover twelve or eighteen numbers at a go. They land far more often, pay far less, and give you the calmest sessions — which matters when your bankroll is a fixed Naira amount for the week. On French tables the even-money bets pick up la partage or en prison as well, halving the house edge to 1.35%.

Here is a quick sanity check: on a European wheel every standard bet gives up exactly 1/37 of the stake on average, no matter its size or payout. Put ₦10,000 on red and ₦10,000 straight up on 17 and the expected loss is the same on both — ₦270 a spin — but the ride could not be more different. Choosing between them is a question of volatility, and that is the business of the roulette strategy guide.
Chips and buying in
At a physical table every player is issued colour chips — a colour that belongs to them alone, worth whatever value they set at buy-in (the dealer marks it with a lammer on the wheel rim). That is how the croupier keeps track when a dozen people are stacking chips on the same numbers. Colour chips are worthless away from that table, so you swap them for cash chips before you walk off. Online there is no such issue: the software tracks ownership, and you simply pick a chip denomination from the tray and tap the layout.
Every table posts a minimum and a maximum. Inside and outside minimums are often different: a ₦500 table may want ₦500 on each outside bet but only ₦500 in total across your inside bets (five ₦100 chips spread over five numbers is perfectly fine). Maximums are usually set per bet type, with straight-up limits lowest and even-money limits highest.

Buy in and set your chip value
Exchange cash for chips, or pick a denomination online after funding your account by bank transfer, USSD or a Paystack- or Flutterwave-powered card deposit. Read the minimum and maximum on the placard before you commit, and fix your session budget now — not after the first loss.
Place your bets
The dealer calls "place your bets", spins the wheel one way and sends the ball the other. Inside bets on the grid, outside bets around it, in any mix you like, right up until the ball starts to drop.
No more bets
Seconds before the ball falls, the dealer sweeps a hand over the layout and calls "no more bets" (rien ne va plus). Any chip touched after that is void. Online, a timer simply closes the betting window.
The ball lands
The dealer drops a marker called the dolly onto the winning number on the layout. While that dolly is standing, hands off every chip on the table.
Losing bets are cleared
The croupier rakes all losing chips into the well. On a French table, even-money bets caught by a zero are either halved (la partage) or held over for the next spin (en prison).
Winning bets are paid
Outside bets are settled first, then inside bets, working from the lowest-value chip colours up. Your original stake stays where it is; if you do not fancy repeating the bet, lift it once the dolly comes off.
Next spin
The dolly is removed and the cycle starts again. A live table gets through roughly 35–60 spins an hour; RNG roulette moves as fast as your thumb.
Call bets and the racetrack
French tables and most European ones offer call bets (also called announced bets), which cover sections of the physical wheel instead of the numerical layout. Online you place them on an oval racetrack diagram. Each one is a fixed bundle of splits and straight-ups placed in a single move, so the house edge stays at 2.70% — they buy you convenience, not an advantage.

Because a call bet mixes splits and straight-ups, what comes back depends on which number lands. A 9-chip voisins bet that hits 0, 2 or 3 (the trio, 2 chips at 11 to 1) returns 24 chips for a net 15; land on 4 instead (a 1-chip split at 17 to 1) and it returns 18 chips, net 9. Play voisins every spin and you still shed 2.70% of those 9 chips per spin on average.
Table etiquette
- Place your own bets wherever you can reach; for far numbers, set the chips down and call the bet to the dealer — never fling chips across the felt.
- Stop betting the moment "no more bets" is called. Late chips are refused, and anyone who keeps trying it is asked to leave.
- Never touch chips while the dolly marker is standing on the layout — your winners included.
- Keep only your own colour chips on the table. To bet cash chips, place them down and tell the dealer the amount.
- Tipping the croupier is done by placing a chip and saying "for the dealer" — customary in the US, far less so in Europe, and nobody will fault you either way at a Lagos or Abuja table.
- Don't ask the dealer where to put your money. They cannot help you, and the numbers stay random regardless.

Software roulette lets you set a chip value, tap your bets and hit spin. The features worth knowing: rebet repeats your last layout, undo lifts the last chip, double doubles every bet on the table, a racetrack tab handles call bets, and a favourites list stores patterns you use often. Most studios run European wheels; French tables with la partage exist but are thinner on the ground, and plenty of studios label a table "French" purely for the layout language, so open the rules panel and confirm la partage is genuinely applied. Minimums sit above RNG, usually ₦500–₦1,000, and VIP tables climb into six figures. Expect it to chew data too, so a Wi-Fi connection or a decent bundle helps.
Bonus terms
Casino welcome offers almost always shut roulette out of wagering, or count it at 5–10% of stake. Some operators also bar you from covering more than a set share of the layout — betting red and black together, for instance — while a bonus is live, and will void the winnings if you try it. Which roulette bet carries the least risk?
The even-money bets — red/black, odd/even, low/high — land most often (48.65% on a European wheel) and give the gentlest swings. On a French table with la partage they also carry the lowest house edge in the game at 1.35%. Just be clear that "least risk" means lowest variance, not a winning bet: the long run still belongs to the house.
What does 35 to 1 actually pay?
A winning straight-up bet pays 35 times your stake as profit and you keep the stake, so ₦1,000 on a number comes back as ₦36,000. The true odds against any single number are 36 to 1 on a European wheel and 37 to 1 on an American one; the gap between those true odds and the payout is exactly where the house edge lives.
Does covering red and black together work?
You can do it, but it achieves nothing. On any non-zero number one bet wins and the other loses, leaving you level; when zero lands you lose both (or half of each under la partage). Net effect: you still surrender 2.70% of the combined stake on average, while guaranteeing you cannot win. Several bonus terms ban it outright as well.
What is a call bet?
A call or announced bet covers a slice of the physical wheel rather than the printed layout. Voisins du zéro takes the 17 numbers around zero with 9 chips, tiers du cylindre takes the 12 numbers opposite zero with 6 chips, and orphelins mops up the remaining 8 numbers with 5 chips. How many numbers sit on a roulette wheel?
A European or French wheel has 37 pockets: 1 to 36 plus one green zero. An American wheel has 38 — the same numbers plus a green double zero. A handful of newer tables add a triple zero for 39 pockets, which pushes the house edge up to 7.69%.
Is roulette a good first casino game?
It is the easiest table game to pick up: once the chips are down there are no decisions to make and no strategy chart to memorise. The trade-off is cost — the 2.70% house edge on a single-zero wheel is steeper than blackjack played with basic strategy (about 0.5%) or the baccarat banker bet (1.06%).
